Glenquary Guest Barn
Set in the rolling countryside of the Southern Highlands of NSW, this bespoke barn home was designed and handcrafted as a generous gathering place for a family whose members return from around the world. Originally conceived as guest accommodation, the finished barn proved so beloved that the clients made it their principal residence.
Completed in 2024, the timber frame design and engineering was carried out by Traditional Timber Frames in collaboration with Allman Johnstone Architects and interior designer Jess Hunter, with construction by AJ Corby Constructions. The result is a luxury barn home that pairs the warmth of traditional craftsmanship with refined, architectural living.
The Brief
The clients wanted a large barn-style home for their Glenquarry property, initially designed as guest accommodation. The brief called for a building with true country barn character, and in the words of interior designer Jess Hunter, one that referenced the timeless layered style of Ralph Lauren. It also needed the scale and capacity to comfortably accommodate a large family returning to visit from across the globe.
Above all, it needed to feel like a home. A place where the whole family could come together under one roof.
Design & Collaboration
Working closely with Allman Johnstone Architects and Jess Hunter Interior Design, Traditional Timber Frames carried out the timber frame design and engineering. The collective goal was to craft a structure that delivered the honest character of a country barn with the proportions of a luxury residence.
he design embraced timber throughout, with generous interior volumes and moody, atmospheric lighting that gives the home its warmth and depth. Built by AJ Corby Constructions, the project was a true collaboration.
The End Result
The finished home is a celebration of timber, light and space. Richly expressed timber framing, moody lighting and generous interior spaces combine to create a barn home that is both dramatic and deeply comfortable. So much so that what began as guest accommodation became the family’s principal residence.
The Glenquarry Guest Barn is currently entered in the Master Builders Awards for Best Home, with Traditional Timber Frames also nominated as Subcontractor of the Year for their work on the project. Winners will be announced in July.
