Modern Farmhouse

Designed and built for Bill and Lucy, a farming family near Dubbo in Western NSW. The brief called for a contemporary Australian farmhouse with European-inspired elegance. The goal was to bring a little old world rustic craftsmanship and character into a very modern, luxurious space.

The Build

Twin king post trusses and exposed beams run the length of the vaulted living and dining pavilion, their timber pegged joints and rustic grain giving the sleek, architectural home genuine barn character. The mixed Australian hardwood received a light grey wash to soften its brightness, letting the timber sit comfortably against the crisp white ceilings and black-framed glazing. Raw structural beams crisscross overhead, framing wide glass doors that open the living space out to uninterrupted views of the surrounding farmland.

The Result

The finished home is spacious and thoroughly modern, with polished concrete floors carrying that understated feel through to the kitchen, where timber shelving, brass tapware and a moody blue island bench sit beneath the same reclaimed beams. A separate reclaimed timber lintel frames the entry, leading through to a light-filled foyer where a grand piano takes centre stage. Outside, the low gabled roofline and deep eaves give the home its farmhouse silhouette, flanked by towering palms against the flat, open Western NSW plains.
